The Port of Tarfaya is oriented towards small-scale coastal fishing. It is located on the Atlantic coast at 27°56' North and 12°55' West. It is connected by the national road RN1 linking Agadir - Tarfaya - Laâyoune. Technical studies are in progress for a project to expand its capacity.
History
The city of Tarfaya has seen intense activity in 1976 as it was chosen as the gathering point of Morocco's historical Green March. As such it was decided to build a fishing port in the city. Construction began in September 1976 and ended in June 1979. The second phase began in 1980 and lasted 16 months. A groyne to prevent sand silting was built added in 1997.
Technical studies are underway to expand its capacity.
